Kim Jong Il fell into a great ring of fire

The name Kim Jong-Il does not translate easily into English from the Korean that it is based on. However, a loose translation of Kim Jong Il from the Korean to English results in a combination of these words: Bluegrass, Country-Western, jam-band, Phish, the Grateful Dead, Appalachian, Johnny Cash, nitty-gritty dirt band, and "rosin up the bow". It's actually quite apropos, as he is a huge proponent of the Newgrass movement. Nickel Creek, Bela Fleck, and Yonder Mountain String Band are national icons in North Korea. Kim Jong-Il himself has been featured as a guest artist on dozens of bluegrass albums.

As you can see in the picture here, Kim Jong-Il is well-received by many members of the bluegrass community. He is a multi-instrumentalist and is known for his brilliant odd-meter improvisations. His principal instrument is the bass; the one he's playing in this picture is one that he purchased from Victor Wooten. In a recent interview, Jong-Il was asked where he gets his inspiration. He replied, "I cannot reasonably own things that are filled with power and smoke." Something was undoubtedly lost in translation. We're pretty sure he meant to say "I can set a show ON FIRE with my SKILLS." What a guy.

An interesting side-note is that all of Kim Jong-Il's direct advisors are required to have a basic working knowledge of country music history. They also must be able to perform most Carter family tunes on a standard acoustic guitar. They each must have also attended and written a 10-page paper on a music festival like Bonnaroo or Wakarusa. And we think the North Korean Oligarchy is close-minded?! RUBBISH!
